Gorilla Nation Logo Design

In June 2007, I led a project to revamp Gorilla Nation’s corporate identity, starting with the logo. The multitalented CEO had drawn the original gorilla head himself, but the company was growing up, and they wanted a classier, more refined mascot.

The final Gorilla Nation 2007 logo

We decided to simplify the company name, from “Gorilla Nation Media” to “Gorilla Nation.” This was completely fine by me, as I’ve always considered the word “media” ambiguous and irrelevant, and especially unnecessary when trying to establish a brand.

Shaking Things Up

I work with a bunch of graphic designers. You can tell which ones have the ability to go far in the field by gauging the activeness of their interest in it. Many just like to play with Photoshop. But some show genuine interest and excitement when others push the envelope and come up with new ideas. They shout, “motherfuckers!!” when they see something new and awesome, jealous that they didn’t think of it first. When interviewing, I care less about a potential co-worker’s skill level, and more about how many curse words come out of their mouth when they see something awesome.

Wario Land: Shake It!

One kid that I’ve got high hopes for sent me this link yesterday. We talked about it for 20 minutes, both equally impressed and pissed. We’re all so burnt out on marketing- it’s the same thing, over and over. The same ideas. The same transparent desperation to “go viral” despite being a completely manufactured antithesis of all truly viral phenomena.

But this is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. And the execution is flawless. Click, and watch the trailer for the new Wario Land game. I promise you, you’ll have to watch it two or three more times. Which makes it more than just cool- it’s extremely effective. By the time you move on, you will most definitely be very aware of the product being sold, with a clear understanding of what it is and why you should buy it.

Customizing PHP5 On DreamHost

So far, DreamHost has been amazing. I can park an unlimited number of domains, with plenty of bandwidth to go around. I can do 95% of everything I need to do, from setting up domains and subdomains, to creating and managing SVN repositories, all with the admin panel. Web hosting seems to have come a long way since 2004.

The only complaint I’ve had with the server setup was the PHP upload limit. I installed wordTube (which I plan to overhaul) on Johnny’s blog, but DreamHost’s global limit of 7MB on shared hosting would make it difficult for Johnny to add videos on a whim, without having to teach him enough about FTP access to be dangerous.

So here’s how I worked around it…

Hello World!

Hi there assholes and assholettes. Sorry I had to take the site down so abruptly, but it had a lot of personal information about me and several people close to me. It didn’t matter when it was only my friends and ex-friends stalking me, but then I got famous.

So what’s best for everyone now, especially me of course, is to come back on the scene sans emo journal, and focus on my resumé and creative output; More than just what I’ve done, but how I did it and what cool shit other people are beating me to doing. I guess I’ll be embracing the blog format a little more than I ever have before, but hopefully that’ll make this site more interesting to more than just my Mom.
