Shaking Things Up

I work with a bunch of graphic designers. You can tell which ones have the ability to go far in the field by gauging the activeness of their interest in it. Many just like to play with Photoshop. But some show genuine interest and excitement when others push the envelope and come up with new ideas. They shout, “motherfuckers!!” when they see something new and awesome, jealous that they didn’t think of it first. When interviewing, I care less about a potential co-worker’s skill level, and more about how many curse words come out of their mouth when they see something awesome.

Wario Land: Shake It!

One kid that I’ve got high hopes for sent me this link yesterday. We talked about it for 20 minutes, both equally impressed and pissed. We’re all so burnt out on marketing- it’s the same thing, over and over. The same ideas. The same transparent desperation to “go viral” despite being a completely manufactured antithesis of all truly viral phenomena.

But this is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. And the execution is flawless. Click, and watch the trailer for the new Wario Land game. I promise you, you’ll have to watch it two or three more times. Which makes it more than just cool- it’s extremely effective. By the time you move on, you will most definitely be very aware of the product being sold, with a clear understanding of what it is and why you should buy it.
